Romanticism or the Romantic Period was an artistic, literary, and intellectual movement that originated in Europe from 1800-1850. Characterized mostly by a reaction against neoclassicism and an emphasis on the imagination and emotions, and marked especially in English literature by sensibility and the use of autobiographical material. Romantic poets cultivated individualism, reverence for the natural world, idealism, physical and emotional passion, and an interest in the mystic and supernatural. Famous poets include William Blake, William Wordsworth, and John Keats.
